Working the Waiver Wire – Week 10

Week 10 already! Double digits. The big 1-0. Damn, this season is flying by. I would like it to slow down a little bit, because fantasy football gives me a nice, relaxing break from my family and I’m not ready for that to be over. Oh wait, I probably should have kept that thought inside my head. Oh well. Here is this week’s Working the Waiver Wire-Numero Diez! (Sorry, I saw Dora the Explorer earlier today)

Quarterback

Colin Kaepernick 49ers

As long as he helps me win fantasy games, I could care less if Kap smokes a bowl during the national anthem.

Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers. I don’t care if Colin Kaepernick stands or kneels for the national anthem, as long as he helps win games. By “win games”, I could also care less if the 49ers win (sorry Hallam), but I want Kap to help me win fantasy games. He’s always a threat to rush the ball, as he’s averaged just under 60 rushing yards per game in his first three games. This week he also showed that he can help you with his arm as well, as he threw for 398 yards and two touchdowns against the Saints. Yes, it was against the Saints, but if you want to look ahead to the fantasy playoffs (Weeks 14-16), San Francisco plays the Jets, Falcons and Rams, which all give this the opportunity to shine. Even in bad matchups, Kap has the potential to salvage a good fantasy game, as he’s always a threat for 70-80 rushing yards, so he’s definitely worth a spot on your roster if your QB1 is a little shaky.

Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens/Trevor Siemian, Denver Broncos. I’m not a huge fan of either Joe Flacco or Trevor Siemian, but if you stream quarterbacks and need to pick up one for this week, you should be looking at both of these guys. Flacco has a dream matchup against Cleveland and Siemian gets New Orleans, and that makes both of them attractive plays this week.

Other Quarterbacks to Consider: Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears. Bryce Petty, New York Jets.

Running Back

Rob Kelley Redskins

Rob Kelley may have Matt Jones’ hair, but let’s hope he doesn’t have his slippery fingers too.

Rob Kelley, Washington Redskins. It appears that Matt Jones has lost his job in Washington. Head coach, Jay Gruden has announced that coming off of the Redskins Week 9 bye, Rob Kelley has earned the role of early down back and will handle a bulk of the carries starting this week. While it’s always nice to find a back with the potential workload Kelley may receive this late in the season, I am tempering my expectations for two reasons. First, Chris Thompson should still receive the bulk of the passing duties, not allowing Kelley to become an every down back. Secondly, the Redskins schedule going forward is absolutely brutal. In the upcoming weeks, Washington plays Minnesota, Green Bay, Dallas, Arizona, Philadelphia and Carolina…a murderers row of rush defenses. That being said, Jay Ajayi is showing that bad matchups don’t necessarily mean anything so he’s definitely worth picking up in hopes he follows in Ajayi’s footsteps.

Paul Perkins, New York Giants. 31 year old, Rashad Jennings has been bad this year. He’s battled some injuries, but even when healthy, he’s averaging a pitiful 2.6 yard per carry on 64 attempts and has only one touchdown on the season. Rookie, Paul Perkins is the better running back at this point, and this week he was able to earn identical touches than Jennings (11 carries/three receptions each) against the Eagles. If the Giants want to make a run at the playoffs, they need to start getting Perkins more involved and after this week, I think they took their first step in doing that. I wouldn’t feel great about putting him in your lineup unless you were absolutely desperate right now, but he’s the kind of lottery ticket that I like to stash on my bench in case the stars align.

Other Running Backs to Consider. Tim Hightower, New Orleans Saints. Chris Ivory, Jacksonville Jaguars. Kapri Bibbs, Denver Broncos. James Starks, Green Bay Packers. DuJuan Harris, San Francisco 49ers.

Wide Receiver

Rishard Matthews Titans

This picture of Rishard Matthews just makes me giggle. I’m so immature…

Rishard Matthews, Tennessee Titans. It took Rishard Matthews a month or so to find his groove for a new team, but now that he and Marcus Mariota are on the same page, things are going very well. His targets are going up and he now has five touchdowns in his last five games. Throw in the fact that he has favorable match ups against Green Bay, Indianapolis and Chicago over the next three weeks, and he could be a decent WR3/Flex play for your playoff run.

Eli Rogers, Pittsburgh Steelers. Yes, Eli Rogers had a nice game against the Baltimore Ravens this week, as he had six receptions for 103 yards. There is more to it than that though. Markus Wheaton was a healthy scratch and seems to have fallen out of favor with the coaching staff. Darrius Heyward-Bey also left the game on Sunday with what looked to be a pretty significant ankle or foot injury, and is in danger of missing some time. Sammie Coates has also battled drops and inconsistency and that opens the door for Eli Rogers to play a bigger role. With Big Ben back, there should be plenty of balls to go around and Rogers could see enough looks to be fantasy relevant going forward.

Other Wide Receivers to Consider. Marqise Lee, Jacksonville Jaguars. Cordarrelle Patterson, Minnesota Vikings. Chris Conley, Kansas City Chiefs.

Tight End

CJ Fiedorowicz Texans

Spike it CJ…spike it!!!

CJ Fiedorowicz, Houston Texans. Coming off a bye, many may not remember that CJ Fiedorowicz was playing really good football. He has scored double digit fantasy points (PPR) in four of his last five games and is becoming a big part of the offense. He has also been averaging about seven targets per game over his last five, and with DeAndre Hopkins and Brock Osweiler not on the same page, his usage rates could continue for the foreseeable future.

Lance Kendricks, St. Louis Rams. If you haven’t been paying attention, Rams tight end, Lance Kendricks has been receiving a nice workload over the past three weeks. He’s had 29 targets in his last three games and he’s turned that into 19 catches for 179 yards and a score.  He’s not necessarily lighting up the box score, but if you need a streamer, I will gladly take a guy who’s getting almost ten targets a week.

Other Tight Ends to Consider: Cameron Brate, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Austin Hooper, Atlanta Falcons. Dwayne Allen, Indianapolis Colts.
