Working the Waiver Wire – Week 7

I think I’ve figured out why fantasy football is so fun…and so frustrating. It’s because no matter how much we think we know, they then go and play the games and show everyone that anything can happen on any given week. At least that gives me something to write about in my weekly waiver wire report, because each week, we get a new crop of players who weren’t necessarily on our radar the previous week. Below is this week’s report of some players who can hopefully help you both next week and going forward.

You can email us fantasy questions at steve@fightingchancefantasy.com and ryan@fightingchancefantasy.com. You can also follow us on Twitter, Steve @fantasygeek37 and Ryan @fightingchance. Also please like Fighting Chance Fantasy on Facebook right here.

Quarterback

Jameis Winston, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I know, I know…Jameis Winston has struggled at times this year. He was bad in Week 2 against the Patrick Peterson, led Arizona Cardinals defense and he struggled again in Week 4 against the Broncos. Those are two of the better defenses in football though, so I’m going to give him a bit of a pass. When Winston is in the zone however, he can be one of the best quarterbacks in football. He threw for 281 yards with four scores in Week 1 against the Falcons and again in Week 3 when he threw for over 400 yards with three touchdowns against the Rams, so the upside is there with famous Jameis. I’m excited because the worst part of the schedule is now behind him, as is his bye week, and his schedule going forward is very, very juicy. Here is is schedule from this week through Week 13. He plays San Francisco, Oakland, Atlanta, Chicago, Kansas City, Seattle and San Diego. The Seahawks are a tough game and the Chiefs are above average, but the others all give me goosebumps thinking about Winston’s potential in those games. To top it off, he plays New Orleans not once, but TWICE in weeks 14-16 which is the fantasy playoffs for most leagues and we all know how bad the Saints are against the pass. Get him on rosters now!

Marcus Mariota Titans

Marcus Mariota has been helping fantasy owners both with his arms and his feet the last two weeks.

Marcus Mariota, Tennessee Titans. Marcus Mariota struggled over the first month of the season, but he now seems to be reaching his stride. He has thrown for three touchdowns and rushed for at least 60 yards in the last two games and is making a play to be a borderline QB1 going forward. He has a nice matchup this week against the Colts and I can easily see him continue his success for at least one more game. He’s got a lot of weapons at his disposal with Delanie Walker, Rishard Matthews, Kendall Wright and Tajae Shape, so while they will still be a “run-first” team, I think he can hold enough value to be a decent QB2 on your roster who you can plug in if your QB1 is struggling or has a bad matchup.

Other Quarterbacks to Consider. Cody Kessler, Cleveland Browns. Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers.

Running Back

Jay Ajayi Dolphins

Jay Ajayi is trying to “run away” with a the lead back duties in Miami.

Jay Ajayi, Miami Dolphins. I highly doubt that Jay Ajayi was in many fantasy football lineups this week with the return of Arian Foster. However, those that did play him, were rewarded handsomely. Ajayi went bonkers as he rushed for 204 yards on 25 carries and scored twice against the Steelers in Week 6. Reports are that Foster is stil not 100% and maybe that was the reason he only had five rushes and played only 11 snaps, but with a perfomance like this, it will be hard to keep Ajayi off the field. Personally, I see a situation like the one in Baltimore where Terrance West was given the opportunity and will hold on to it as long as he keeps performing. I think that if Ajayi can keep it up, he will keep Foster limited to being a passing down player that can give Ajayi a spell now and again to keep him fresh. Ajayi needs to be owned in ten and twelve team leagues.

James White, New England Patriots. James White loves having Tom Brady back. He’s not going to be the running back who rushes for over 100 yards, but he is a very good receiver and in Brady’s two games played, White has 12 receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns. It looks like we won’t see Dion Lewis return until after their bye in Week 9 at the earliest and that means that White will have some time to bring value to fantasy owners, particularly in PPR leagues. Since there is no guarantee that Dion Lewis will return as the same player he was at the beginning of last year, I like the chances that White holds value for the remainder of the season.

Other Running Backs to Consider: Jacquizz Rodgers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Chris Ivory, Jacksonville Jaguars. Bilal Powell, New York Jets.

Wide Receiver

Last week, I mentioned Cameron Meredith from the Chicago Bears, who had another strong week. Since I don’t normally like to list people two weeks in a row, I will simply say he is my top wide receiver waiver target if he’s still unowned in your league.

Kenny Britt Rams

He’s fooled me before, but Kenny Britt looks like he’s turning things around in LA this year.

Kenny Britt, Los Angeles Rams. I am admittedly, not the biggest Kenny Britt fan in the world. I’ve been waiting for this guy to break out since his rookie season eight years ago (can you believe it’s been that long?), and have been burned several times by him throughout the years. However, it looks like he may have found himself a role in LA as he has been a very steady fantasy contributor all year for the Rams. Britt has at least four receptions in every game this year, had at least six targets in each game, and this week he found the end zone for the first time this season as well as he scored twice in a loss to the Lions. Britt should be owned in most leagues and can be a nice flex play until further notice.

Cole Beasley, Dallas Cowboys. Looking at Cole Beasley, you wouldn’t think he’s a very good football player. Looks can be deceiving however, as Beasley has become a favorite target of rookie quarterback, Dak Prescott and he now has scored double digit fantasy points (PPR) in every game this season. In Week 6, he had his best game of the year as he caught six balls for 58 yards with two scores against the Packers and the Cowboys are looking like the team to beat in the NFC East. He is going into the bye this week, but he has been about as steady as they come this year and is the perfect kind of guy to roster that you can plug into your lineup if you’re in a pinch.

Other Wide Receivers to Consider: Anquan Boldin, Detroit Lions. Robert Woods, Buffalo Bills. Torrey Smith, San Francisco 49ers. Brandon LaFell, Cincinnati Bengals.

Tight End

Hunter Henry, San Diego Chargers. Many thought that when Antonio Gates returned from his injury, rookie tight end, Hunter Henry would be relegated back to a small role in the offense. Well, that hasn’t been the case as he went 3-74-1 last week against the Raiders and 6-83-1 this past Thursday against the Raiders since Gates’ return. He now has at least 61 yards in four straight games and has found the end zone in three consecutive contests. He looks every bit the part of a future superstar and until further notice, should be owned in both ten and twelve team leagues.

Other Tight Ends to Consider: Jack Doyle, Indianapolis Colts. Eric Ebron, Detroit Lions. CJ Fiedorowicz, Houston Texans. Ladarius Green, Pittsburgh Steelers.
