If you’re looking for a savior on the waiver wire this week, unfortunately, I’m just not seeing it. That’s not to say that there aren’t guys who can’t help your fantasy team, but this week doesn’t seem to have that one or two “must-have” players like some weeks have. Even without the stud acquisition, we have four teams on a bye this week and paired with injuries, it is very likely that you could use players now. Below are some players that I would target at each position if you need help.

Quarterback
Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles. I normally try not to list players on my waiver report two weeks in a row, but in a week that lacks free agent talent, Carson Wentz is my favorite quarterback that’s owned in less than 50% of leagues. He can kill you in the air and on his feet and with his bye week behind him, he is a legitimate fantasy option most weeks going forward. He has shown considerable poise for a rookie and he faces the Lions and Redskins in the next two weeks, who are both currently in the bottom third of the league in giving up passing yards.
Brian Hoyer, Chicago Bears. One man’s loss is another man’s gain. While most assumed that once Jay Cutler returned from his thumb injury, he would resume his role as the quarterback of the Bears, head coach John Fox came out on Monday and said “Nay, Nay”. His exact quote was, “”Anybody’s that performing well, I don’t think we’re going to be likely to change”. Oh oh, Jay Cutler. He was referring to Brian Hoyer, who has thrown for over 300 yards with two touchdowns in consecutive weeks now and he sees the Colts and the Jaguars in the next two weeks. With weapons like Alshon Jeffery and Kevin White, Hoyer could be a nice option over the next few weeks.
Other Quarterbacks to Consider: Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens. Case Keenum, St. Louis Rams.
Running Back
Terrance West, Baltimore Ravens. First and foremost, last week I mentioned adding Ravens rookie, running back Kenneth Dixon and he still remains my favorite Ravens, running back target as far as upside goes. However, he’s still out with an injury and this week, Terrance West supplanted Justin Forsett in the pecking order in Baltimore’s backfield. West performed very well against the Raiders, as he turned 21 carries into 113 yards and a touchdown. I’m cautious as the Raiders are giving up the most yards per carry to running backs in the AFC this season, but as of now, it looks like he will hang on to a larger role in the offense until Dixon is ready. He can be a decent flex play, particularly in standard leagues.
Bilal Powell, New York Jets. If you’re looking for a running back who will get you ten or more rushing attempts each week, you may not want to look at Bilal Powell. He only has 13 total rushing attempts in his four games and has yet to have more than four attempts in a single game. However, the last two weeks he’s had six receptions in each game, allowing him to have double digit fantasy points in PPR leagues in each of those contests. Matt Forte has had a ridiculous workload to start the season and if the Jets want to keep the 30 year old, Forte healthy and productive all season, they would be wise to get Powell more involved in the offense. He is also one of the better handcuffs in fantasy football, so while he may not be a consistent fantasy scorer, he can give you some adequate production during the bye weeks with a higher upside if Forte goes down.
Other Running Backs to Consider: Wendall Smallwood, Philadelphia Eagles. Fozzy Whittaker, Carolina Panthers. Dwayne Washington, Detroit Lions.
Wide Receiver
Corey Coleman, Cleveland Browns. In fantasy football, you need to be more proactive than reactive, because if you wait too long to pick up a particular player, you will likely miss out. That may be the case with Corey Coleman as he is currently sitting out with a broken hand for a few more weeks. Coleman flashed his upside in Week 2 as he caught five passes for 102 yards with two scores against the Baltimore Ravens, but then suffered the four to six week injury the following week in practice. With two weeks down, he should be back in the next two to four weeks and with Josh Gordon falling off the wagon and likely done with the Browns, Coleman should resume a large target share once healthy. He has the most upside of anyone on this waiver report and if you can afford to stash him for a few weeks, Coleman is my favorite waiver wire target for Week 5.
Robert Woods, Buffalo Bills. News broke this week that Bills wide receiver, Sammy Watkins was to be placed on the IR and is in serious danger of missing the rest of the season and that could make Robert Woods the de facto, number one wide receiver in Buffalo. While he doesn’t sport the upside of Watkins, Woods could offer decent weekly production, particularly in PPR leagues. In the two week is that Watkins has missed, Woods has totaled 13 catches for 140 yards and he can get you solid numbers as we dive deep into bye season.
Other Wide Receivers to Consider. Quincy Enunwa, New York Jets. Phillip Dorsett, Indianapolis Colts. Brice Butler, Dallas Cowboys. Eddie Royal, Chicago Bears.
Tight End
Cameron Brate, Tampa Bay Bucanneers. Despite Austin Seferian-Jenkins getting dumped over a week ago and Cameron Brate scoring two touchdowns last week, Brate is still only owned in 9% of ESPN leagues. He followed up his two touchdowns performance with five catches for 67 yards against a tough Denver Broncos defense this week. With a total of 18 targets over the past two weeks, Brate looks like he will be a big part of the Tampa offense going forward and should be added in all 12 team leagues.
Other Tight Ends to Consider: Hunter Henry, San Diego Chargers. Richard Rodgers, Green Bay Packers.
