Quarterback
Look, if you’ve made it this far without a top tier quarterback, you’ve probably done it by streaming quarterbacks successfully. There aren’t any quarterbacks this week below 50% ownership that I would feel comfortable with rolling out the next three weeks regardless of matchup, so it’s basically week to week now. Here are the quarterbacks that are available in more than half of fantasy football leagues with favorable matchups this week.
Colin Kaepernick, SF vs New York Jets. Make sure to check later in the week that he hasn’t been replaced by Blaine Gabbert.
Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens @ New England Patriots.
Jared Goff, St. Louis Rams @ Atlanta Falcons.
Matt Barkley, Chicago Bears @ Detroit Lions.
Brock Osweiler, Houston Texans @ Indianapolis Colts
Running Back
Alfred Morris, Dallas Cowboys. What in the hell has Alfred Morris done recently to justify being my top waiver target among running backs this week? Absolutely nothing! However, it’s what the Cowboys are doing that has me excited for Morris. Dallas can secure the division and a first round bye with a win this week and if they win, paired with a Seahawks loss to the Packers (in Green Bay nonetheless), they will also clinch the top seed in the NFC. That means that the Cowboys may choose to rest stud, Ezekiel Elliott and hand the reigns over to Alfred Morris. Zeke currently leads the NFL in rushing attempts and considering the rookie wall is a very real thing in the NFL, the Cowboys would be wise to try and keep him fresh (and healthy) for a playoff run. There isn’t a better running back stash in fantasy football right now than Alfred Morris.
Charles Sims, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It looks as though Charles Sims is ready to return from the IR and head coach, Dirk Koetter has said that he could return as soon as this week against the Saints. He should immediately play a major role in the passing game and with Doug Martin missing the last three series last week, he could even play a larger role. He’s more valuable in PPR leagues, but is also worth a roster spot in deeper twelve team standard leagues.
Other Running Backs to Consider: Rex Burkhead, Cincinnati Bengals. Mike Gillislee, Buffalo Bills. Christine Michael, Green Bay Packers. Paul Perkins, New York Giants.
Wide Receiver
Malcolm Mitchell, New England Patriots. It looks like Patriots’ rookie wide receiver, Malcolm Mitchell wasn’t a flash in the pan as he put up his third consecutive good week, catching eight balls for 82 yards against the Rams in Week 13. What has me most excited about him, is that in those three weeks, his targets have increased from five targets, to seven, to ten this past week. Throw in the fact that Gronk is out for the rest of the season and most of the Pats’ other pass catchers are banged up, and Mitchell could see a lot of work over the next few weeks. Oh yeah, he also has one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the game chucking him the ball too, which is definitely something to keep in mind as well.
Dontrelle Inman, San Diego Chargers. Over the last six weeks, Dontrelle Inman has quietly gone under the radar with the emergence of Tyrell Williams in the San Diego Chargers’ passing attack. Don’t overlook him however, as he has quietly put together a nice month and a half. Over that time, he has averaged over seven targets per game, for almost 70 receiving yards per game and has now scored a touchdown in consecutive contests. He also has favorable matchups against Carolina, Oakland and Cleveland coming up, which makes me like him even more.
Other Wide Receivers to Consider: Ted Ginn, Carolina Panthers. Pierre Garçon, Washington Redskins. Will Fuller, Houston Texans. Adam Thielen, Minnesota Vikings. Tyler Boyd, Cincinnati Bengals.
Tight End
Ladarius Green, Pittsburgh Steelers. Both Ladarius Green and Dwayne Allen were in consideration for the top tight end waiver target this week as both had really good games. Green had six receptions for 110 yards with a touchdown, while Allen had four catches for 72 yards with three scores on Monday Night Football. How did I decide on Green? Well, opportunity is huge in fantasy football and Green did his damage on a whopping 11 targets, while Allen did his on only four. I think Green will be a more consistent force in the Steelers’ offense going forward and ultimately, that was the deciding factor. He has the higher upside and with the tight end position really lacking top talent right now, Green could very well give teams the firepower to advance in the fantasy playoffs.
Other Tight Ends to Consider: Dwayne Allen, Indianapolis Colts. Jermaine Gresham, Cincinnati Bengals. Dennis Pitta, Baltimore Ravens.
